The following is adapted from a prayer composed by Susan R. Schorr
Our Congregation Remembers . . .
In this time of coming together and remembering, we pause to recognize that our congregation cannot be complete. We know that faces we greeted every year are absent, that voices we sang with are silent, and friends we sat with are among us no longer. The soul of our community has been changed forever—by their absence and by our shared experience of their loss.
Our tradition gives us this time to recall family members, martyrs and heroes. Now, we insert into it a time for marking the losses to our own Dor Hadash community. In our remembering, we cannot focus only on the pain and emptiness. We honor them best when we remember them vibrant and active and when we recall the many ways they enriched our lives and enlivened our congregation.
We remember members who always had a contribution to make during study sessions and sermon/discussions; those whose awareness of varied Jewish musical traditions added depth and beauty to our services; individuals who greeted us with a smile or a hug whenever we were together at Dor Hadash events; members who taught our children, with whom we shared monthly committee meetings, potluck dinners and participation in the work of the synagogue; those we met at Gesher School, the Gala or a holiday celebration; and fellow congregants whose stories of their lives added to our understanding of what it means to be a Jew in the modern era. Finally, we mourn those we knew perhaps only by sight or by name.
May their memories continue to be a blessing to our congregation. We celebrate their lives and we remember...

There are stars whose light reaches the earth only after they themselves have disintegrated and are no more. And there are people whose scintillating memory lights the world after they have passed from it. These lights which shine in the darkest night are those which illumine for us the path.
