The following is adapted from a prayer composed by Susan R. Schorr

Dor Hadash remembers our beloved ones…
Yom Kippur is our moment, each year, to come together as community to recommit to the good. We don’t do that alone. We do it in community, supporting and sustaining each other.

This year the day weighs more heavily, for we are missing those who helped build this community and who have stood at our side for so many Yom Kippur services in years past. Their faces shone back at ours at other times as well: at onegs and Shabbat tables, at shivas and simchas, in struggle and celebration, in the milestone moments of this community.

They made the fabric of Dor Hadash richer at Torah Study, in prayer, as part of the Gesher community, or as part of havurot, as volunteers and leaders, singing and praying, teaching and learning with us.

Even in the midst of tears and anguish, we do our best to honor the dead when we maintain their memory, sharing with each other the moments when they made the world better or brighter. We honor them further still when we uphold the values and ethics they taught and represented, and when we give tzedakah in honor of who they were in our world.
זֵכֶר צַדִּיק לִבְרָכָה  Zecher tzaddik livracha.  (Proverbs 10:7)
“May the memory of our righteous always be for a blessing.”

There are stars whose light reaches the earth only after they themselves have disintegrated and are no more. And there are people whose scintillating memory lights the world after they have passed from it. These lights which shine in the darkest night are those which illumine for us the path.
