New Member Dinner
On Saturday evening, October 25, six of our ten new member families were able to join the new Membership Onboarding Team (Cheryl Altman, Fran Meronoff, Susan Levine, Patti Nussbaum, Marlene Bellamy, Amelia Glaser, Betsy Schneider), Rabbi Mike, Rabbi J, and President Aran Tavakoli for a delicious dinner and havdallah. GENPALS
On Sunday, October 5, inside the JCC's sukkah, twelve CDH seniors and about 20 kids got busy painting rocks. Initiated by one of our high school seniors, Gen Pals envisions helping our oldest and youngest members get acquainted by doing something fun. Rabbi J oversaw this kickoff event.
HIGH HOLY DAYS AT DOR HADASH
The High Holy Days began on Selichot, Saturday evening, September 13 for a workshop and service. The theme for the evening was "This is Your Life: A Personal Spiritual Inventory for the High Holy Days." Rabbi Mike facilitated to help us look at our past year, our hopes for our lives, and pathways to return to our best selves. We looked at traditional and modern texts, thought about our personal stories, and had opportunities for reflective writing (and sharing) as we looked forward to a new year of blessing and renewal. and service.
On Monday evening, September 22, the community joined together for our annual Rosh Hashanah seder. Many thanks to the JCC staff for their hard work in setting up the venue; to Naomi Jensen, Judy Hante and the Seder Team for organizing the evening; to Ely Freedman for her accompaniment, and to Pita 22 for their always delicious meal.
On Tuesday, September 23, we gathered for our Rosh Hashanah service and on Wednesday, September 24, we spent the morning discussing Social Justice. We are told on the High Holy Days that any negative decrees against us can be solved in three ways--tefilah, teshuvah and tzedakah. Following our Day 1 service of tefillah (prayer) and teshuvah (repentance), we met for a study and conversation about the ways that we can bring tzedak and tzedakah into the world. Building on the work of our newly revived Social Justice committee, we looked at classic Jewish texts and modern interpretations for the mitzvah of pursuing justice.
On Wednesday night and Thursday we gathered for Yom Kippur and ended with a beautiful havdallah.

HAVDALLAH AT THE BAY • August 30
Over 75 members and friends gathered at Mission Bay Park on Saturday evening, August 30, (Labor Day weekend) to bid farewell to Shabbat and welcome in the new week. Thank you to the Havdallah Team for organizing the evening and to all who brought delicious food to share. Everyone enjoyed the DIY besamim (fragrant herbs, roots, spices) table where we filled little bags with cloves, cinnamon and star anise and made our own besamim bag to have during havdallah.. Before the havdallah service began and in honor of Labor Day, we shared a poem written by Rabbi Mike entitled Prayer for Workers. Click here to read the poem.
Didn't quite capture the entire service in the video below, but most of it.

We came back and honored our new b'nai mitzvah class with their siddurim and our newest Gesher students with their own Torah.

January 14, 2024
Our Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service was celebrated on January 14. Rabbi Yael welcomed members and guests and introduced our speaker, Carole Yellen from Jewish Family Service, who presented about antisemitism: what antisemitism is, antisemitism in history, ways antisemitism is manifested, and how to deal with antisemitism. After the speaker, adults and students rotated through the stations that were set up around the room, with themes of homeless and feeding the hungry, make art for peace, send messages of support to Sha'ar Hanegev, learn about the struggles of indigenous peoples, and make mitzvah bags. The children took a break and enjoyed the new adaptive playground at the JCC. The energy and enthusiasm was overwhelming, thanks to the hard work of our social justice team: Naomi Jensen, Giza Braun, Ayala Ben-Tall, Judy Hante, Susan Matthews, Ely Freedman, and Ros Goldstein, with the support of Betsy Schneider, Rabbi Yael, and Becca Lewison. Thank you to everyone who made this event a success.
